Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Picogrid: Building the Infrastructure Layer for Modern Defense
Q: Can you talk a little bit about the form factor and how you deliver this?
The military still buys widgets, but Picogrid focuses on the integration layer between those widgets. We ship edge nodes as physical boxes that provide compute, networking, and power, paired with a license model tied to the networked endpoints. This aligns incentives with end users and enables ongoing support and field updates without turning every system into a bespoke software project.
Picogrid: Building the Infrastructure Layer for Modern Defense
Q: Awesome, and it sounds like there's a lot to dig in there. But first, how did you end up working on this?
I got involved after working on sensors for autonomous systems and catching the Pentagon's attention, which led to an early contract. The key challenge was not just building tech but actually employing it in real military scenarios, which inspired the move to create middleware that can connect disparate tools quickly and reliably.
Albedo: New Frontiers in Orbit: Building Imaging Satellites for VLEO (Very Low Earth Orbit)
Q: Was there a moment you doubted the project could work, or did frames of reference from prior work keep you confident?
There was consistent confidence built on past experience with complex missions and first-principles thinking. However, the team also faced genuine uncertainty about whether a space system could be built in-house, which prompted a shift away from off-the-shelf components toward more bespoke solutions and rigorous engineering.
Albedo: New Frontiers in Orbit: Building Imaging Satellites for VLEO (Very Low Earth Orbit)
Q: What was the genesis of the idea behind Albedo and the move toward VLEO?
The idea grew from multiple threads: pushing for higher resolution imagery, but also recognizing that flying closer to Earth could enable much smaller, cheaper hardware while delivering drone-like imagery. This realization, combined with collaboration among co-founders who had space experience, led to pursuing a VLEO-based imaging platform with a focus on cost efficiency and high performance.
Deepnight: AI Night Vision That Beats $30K Goggles
Q: What were you working on before starting Deepnight, and how did your background shape the project?
Lucas describes his background in photography and on-device AI at Google, focusing on camera apps for Pixel, lens flare removal, and other image-enhancement features, which informed the practical constraints and hardware-aware design of Deepnight.
