1998年2月22日清晨，辽宁省铁岭市昌图县毛家店镇横沟村，68岁的王老汉在村外发现三具被烧焦的尸体，身上盖着一床烧毁的花布棉被。经法医鉴定，三名死者（两男一女）均为先被杀害后焚尸，尸体被整齐排列，现场有轮胎印和血迹，推测为抛尸焚尸的第二现场。
警方成立“2·22”专案组。通过颅像重合技术，确认女死者为32岁的张淑琴，曾用名“张光”，在四平市从事三陪服务，嗜赌，与多名男性有复杂关系。其住处被确认为第一杀人现场。
