  • Fantastic interviews with in-depth experts across the world

Having worked with insect agriculture for a decade this series is a great lineup of heavy-hitters doing important and illuminating research. I’ll admit my bias, but I would definitely recommend this podcast for anyone who is remotely curious about insects for food, feed, fiber, fuel or fertilizer, and the massive economic, environmental and health impacts they can have on our growing populations.

#31 Welfare and Trust in Insect Farming, with Meghan Barrett.
Q: What practical steps can the industry take to address welfare credibly and transparently?
Adopt minimal welfare standards backed by independently collected data and involve independent authorities to ensure credibility and avoid rubber-stamping, while maintaining ongoing outreach and education to address public concerns.

Q: From your perspective, how important is open collaborative conversation in getting welfare right?
Open dialogue is crucial because the field is still young; many people don't know what welfare looks like in insects, so transparent, science-based communication helps build trust and aligns stakeholders.
#31 Welfare and Trust in Insect Farming, with Meghan Barrett.
Q: From a welfare perspective, what does the science say about feeding chickens live insects?
There are two benefits: antimicrobial peptides that improve immune function and behavioral enrichment from live feeding that allows natural behaviors, which can indicate positive welfare when properly managed.
#31 Welfare and Trust in Insect Farming, with Meghan Barrett.
Q: How does animal welfare science actually work?
Welfare is assessed across three categories—physiological well-being, behavioral expression, and environmental conditions—to determine how well animals are cared for and how this relates to their productivity and overall well-being.
#32 Black Soldier Fly Farming in Africa: Field Experiences and Practical Implementation, with Daniela Peguero.
Q: What are the key project frameworks and where are they implemented?
The BUGS Africa project focuses on biomass utilization for green solutions in Ethiopia, Côte d'Ivoire, and Uganda, while the SWIFT project targets waste-based insect farming technologies in Uganda and Malawi, aiming to promote adoption of BSF in Africa.
