  • Episode 850: a TERRIBLE into to this podcast

I heard of this podcast for the first time this week. It sounded like something I might be interested in. I gave it a listen. The episode that came up was #850. That began with a full 30 minutes of commercial for the podcast and George’s other projects. It was very self-congratulatory and contained nothing of value for the listener. I give up. You need to give listeners some reason to listen to your podcast in the first 30 seconds — never mind the first 30 minutes. Maybe that stuff was intere... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Geologic Podcast Episode #967
Q: What's the origin of the term chops used by musicians?
Chops has two commonly cited roots: one is the idea of 'wood shedding' or practicing intensely in a 'woodshed,' which over time came to mean the musician's practiced skill or 'chops.' The other is a reference to embouchure and teeth ('choppers'), linking physical ability to the mouth and embouchure. Over decades the term broadened to describe a musician's overall technique and stylistic ability, persisting since the jazz era.
The Geologic Podcast Episode #966
Q: You've shown yourself to be a pretty versatile musician with skills in a bunch of instruments and genres. Have you ever found a genre, or maybe a style or particular instrument, that you can't do, like no matter how much you try, you just can't seem to get the hang of it?
The host explains that there are instruments he can't play well (wind instruments) but emphasizes a willingness to learn given time and practice, and notes that some rhythmic and cultural subtleties are challenging, though possible with time and effort.
The Geologic Podcast Episode #960
Q: Can you name other bands that handle lineup changes similarly without alienating long‑time fans?
Bands that routinely refresh their lineup by presenting a line of new iterations—while preserving core sonic or cultural DNA—tend to earn goodwill when they communicate clearly about the evolution and show commitment to their fans' experience, not just financial gain.
The Geologic Podcast Episode #960
Q: What was your take on Rush performing with a new drummer and the four‑piece setup at the Juno Awards?
I think it was a smart, strategic move that both honoured the band's legacy and allowed the new lineup to establish itself without replacing the spirit of the old era. The choice of a classic early track provided a cushion for Anika to be introduced as drummer, and it showed Getty's voice in a way that was both respectful and forward‑looking.
The Geologic Podcast Episode #961
Q: George, Astrodome, nice. Can you or have you ever played drums in a metal/slash hardcore style, e.g. very short fast songs with two bass drums?
The closest I've come is a partial nod to it, but I've never fully attempted that extreme style; I admire the technique and point out the ergonomic challenges and artistry involved, though I don't perform it regularly.
