  • Fantastic show for all hobby gamers!

Michael and Doug are great! Their exchanges are informative and a lot of fun to listen to. They provide thoughtful insight into games and the gaming experience with great energy and enthusiasm. This is certainly a valuable podcast for educators (I’m a high school teacher who helps run our school’s board game society); I’d also suggest this is a unique podcast in the boardgaming ‘milieu’ (credit Mike Dilisio/Dan Hughes) that all hobby gamers might appreciate. I’ve really enjoyed going through... more

  • Informative and Fun

I had my own podcast about board games a while back, but it's success wasn't meant to be. After calling it quits, I was in search of board gaming podcasts that were close to what I was trying to do. To the point, concise and informative podcasts with their own uniques twist. Not just a group of friends who fill their show with never ending inside jokes and like the sound of their own voice.

Luckily, I found these guys, and although they are way more family friendly than my show was, the informa... more

  • Insightful! For parents, teachers, and anyone who wants to play board games with kids.

Every week, Mike and Doug break down skills involved in a board game that they recommend. Educational concepts, skill-building, and difficulties are discussed, along with techniques to make learning easier and more fun.

Although the show can run a little long, the different segments that make up a show are all great.

  • Great insight and recommended games!

I’ve probably bought 20 games based on their recommendations! Such great insight into the educational opportunities these games utilize. I’ve gotten my extended family into the podcast and recommend it to coworkers and friends frequently! One thing in particular that I appreciate is they will give recommendations on age that don’t necessarily match up to the box recommendation. So helpful!

  • Fun and informative

I love this podcast. Doug and Michael tackle board games from the viewpoint of how they can be used to develop children’s cognitive and social skills, both in school and at home. Don’t discount the podcast if you’re not an educator though: these guys have a natural, engaging way of describing game mechanics which so far has made me want to buy nearly every game that they’ve featured!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 242 - Newton In Caldera Park
Q: Why do some players audit others' turns or doubt decisions at the table?
The behavior tends to reveal insecurity, competitiveness, or arrogance in some players rather than any deficiency in the person being audited; it's more about how others perceive expertise and control at the table than about the audited player.
Episode 242 - Newton In Caldera Park
Q: Do you have to be good at a game to enjoy it?
No; you can enjoy the experience and learn as you go, with growth mindset and exploration of new strategies, even if you don't win. The enjoyment often comes from engagement and the process, not just the end score.
Episode 232 - Joe Hout - Designer of 3 Chapters
Q: What's the best part about being a game designer?
The best part is the creativity and the joy you see when someone smiles while playing your game; designing is about giving people a moment of happiness and connection, which feels like making the world a better place one game at a time.
Episode 232 - Joe Hout - Designer of 3 Chapters
Q: What got you into designing and how did you start publishing your games?
Designing began as tweaking existing games I loved; I moved from self-publishing with Kickstarter to working with Twin City Games, and later Amigo took the project to a global audience, with editor-driven refinements and localization adjustments, especially for the German edition of Three Chapters.
Episode 232 - Joe Hout - Designer of 3 Chapters
Q: Can you give our listeners the pitch of Three Chapters?
Three Chapters is a fairy tale card game that bridges light-hearted drafting with approachable trick-taking, allowing players to build a hand of fairy tale characters across three chapters and score through stars, gems, and hearts, all in a compact 15-30 minute game.
