Getting Sediment-al with Sevenson
Q: How does the cement addition affect the end product?
Cement dries and strengthens the sediment, helping to stabilize contaminants and prevent slump in the final placement cells, while maintaining a workable consistency for ongoing construction. It is not meant to create a concrete-like structure, but to enable safe handling and long-term stability of the placed material.
Getting Sediment-al with Sevenson
Q: What makes this sediment dredging project uniquely challenging?
The project combines a very thick sediment slurry, high solids content, and long-distance pumping to a dedicated processing site, plus a complex pipeline network along a public trail. There are design constraints, regulatory requirements, and a need to manage debris and cultural resources, all while keeping the public safe and maintaining progress toward removing the dam.
Getting Sediment-al with Sevenson
Q: Tell us a little bit about the company you work for and its history.
Sevenson Environmental Services is a long-established environmental remediation contractor based in Niagara Falls, New York. The firm grew out of the seven founding sons and expanded from general contracting into environmental dredging and remediation, notably stemming from early work on Love Canal and an emphasis on large-scale sediment cleanup projects.
The Lower 46.5
Q: Who makes up the AOC and what organizations are involved?
The AOC is a partnership of local municipalities, governmental entities, park districts, private businesses, and ex officio state and federal agencies; it is oriented around a 25-member voting body plus ex officio members like Ohio EPA, US EPA, and US Geological Survey, all collaborating without a dedicated central staff.
Engineering a Healthier River
Q: Pat, how did you get interested in engineering and make it your life's work?
Pat explains early experiences with forestry, a pivot to civil engineering, the appeal of the project lifecycle from planning to implementation, and how family background in engineering shaped his path.
