  • Great host and guests!

A good podcast - IMHO - is one in which you find you want to be part of the conversation. Frame by frame had me interjecting my own thoughts and questions (out loud) while engaging me to think about a subject that I might not ordinarily think about. The passion of the guests is what really struck me the most - their knowledge and the way it was delivered makes the whole subject approachable!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How Viruses Reshape the Brain: Imaging Neuroinflammation and Cancer Pathways with Claudia Kirsch
Q: Can you explain how SARS-CoV-2 might get into the brain if the olfactory pathways seem involved but ACE2 receptors are scarce there?
The virus likely uses multiple routes: it can affect blood supply and immune-mediated pathways via tiny nerve fibers that run alongside olfactory structures, and possibly enter through blood circulation while binding to limited ACE2 receptors in specific microenvironments. Both direct and indirect mechanisms are plausible and are being studied with high-resolution imaging and biobank samples.
The 20,000 Student Problem: Reimagining Radiology Education Pathways with Geoffrey Roche
Q: What is the imaging assistant concept and how could it be implemented?
Imaging assistants would perform non-licensed tasks in imaging departments, such as patient intake, triage, basic measurements, and rooming patients, allowing licensed technologists to focus on scanning. The curriculum would be developed by ASRT and rolled out across hospitals with partnerships to create apprenticeships and on-the-job training.
45% Fewer Autopsies: How Postmortem CT Is Changing Death Investigation in the U.S.
Q: What was the moment you realized this approach could change how deaths are investigated?
The very first post-mortem CT case showed that CT could identify a ruptured aorta and potentially obviate an autopsy in similar cases, proving the collaborative approach could alter traditional workflows.
The Triple-Certified Technologist: Fixing Radiology’s 20% Workforce Gap
Q: With a large waiting list for radiology education, is online training a viable route to expand access, and how does your program fit into that landscape?
Online pathways are a viable and essential route to expand access, particularly for working professionals and those in underserved areas. Our program targets medical imaging professionals already in the field and is expanding toward entry-level MRI assistance to open doors for new entrants while continuing to upskill current technologists.
The Triple-Certified Technologist: Fixing Radiology’s 20% Workforce Gap
Q: What roadblocks did you face when designing and launching the online program, and how did you overcome them?
The main challenges were ensuring trust from radiologists and clinical sites and proving that online formats could maintain rigorous assessments, effective clinical readiness, and meaningful hands-on experience through simulations and structured check-points. Once the curriculum demonstrated clear benefits for patient care and digital integration across sites, support grew and implementation proceeded.
