  • Best 15 minutes of education available

I’m a PGY-2 resident and have been listening this podcast for two years now (dating back to MS4 days). With that said, I believe there is invaluable education here with these monthly podcasts, and this led me to think about of the concepts presented in ways myself that I otherwise would not have.

The Q&A format opens up to a deep dive into concepts that simply reading the articles myself would not have obtained.

Will be a longtime listener. Thanks!!

FAI June 2026 Podcast: Surgical Helmet Systems Were Not Associated With Lower Operative Infection Rates After Total Ankle Arthroplasty: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Q: Could you provide the listener a brief summary of your paper and its major findings?
The study evaluated whether surgical helmet systems were associated with lower infection rates after primary total ankle arthroplasty. It reviewed 938 ankles over 10 years and found no reduction in superficial or deep infections with helmet use; overall infection was about 5% in both groups and deep infection around 2.6–2.7%, with no differences in survivorship or functional outcomes.
Long-Term Survivorship of INBONE II Total Ankle Arthroplasty
Q: Why did you not include Dr. Hodges Davis as a co-author despite involvement in the procedures, and how do you manage design-surgeon bias in your study?
Dr. Davis was out of clinical practice and employed by the implant manufacturer, so residents and fellows collected and analyzed the data with oversight to reduce bias; no data collection or writing by him, ensuring authorship reflects those involved in the study.
Long-Term Survivorship of INBONE II Total Ankle Arthroplasty
Q: Sam, what are your three most important teaching points for successful total ankle arthroplasty?
Preoperative valuation with a solid plan, achieving deformity correction, and careful component sizing to avoid gutter impingement, while recognizing that gutter deformities and impingement drive re-operations more than other issues.
FAI January 2026 Podcast: Outcomes Following First MTPJ Replacement Using the Roto-Glide Prosthesis
Q: Dr. Rajan, you take care of patients in Nepal and I want to compliment you on your amazing orthopedic work that you've done in that part of the world. Would you perform first MTP joint replacement for your Nepali patients?
If I'm not available there, as I am readily available here in the UK, I would not perform that surgery.
FAI January 2026 Podcast: Outcomes Following First MTPJ Replacement Using the Roto-Glide Prosthesis
Q: Rohan, you mentioned having nearly 20 years' experience with more than one type of implant for this procedure. Please share why the skeptics should not shy away from this procedure.
I am the first to admit that there is a learning curve with new procedures, but I am prepared to teach others.
