Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 10: Licence Transitions
Q: And what happens or what has happened if someone hasn't complied with that transition?
There are several scenarios, including people choosing to close their license through surrender, correcting license types, or joining clubs to keep shooting; for those who do nothing, licenses expire and firearms can be seized if action isn't taken, but there is still an opportunity to comply for those who engage with authorities.
Episode 10: Licence Transitions
Q: So Commander, I know there's been a huge amount of work behind the scenes. Where are we currently sitting with the reform?
We are well into the implementation phase with the portal up and running, more than 50,000 accounts created, and several rounds of voluntary buybacks; many firearms have been surrendered as part of the transition.
Episode 13: Firearm Authority Health Examinations
Q: What does Part C of the health examination represent and how does it affect licensing?
Part C is the doctor's assessment; WA Police retains this portion and it can be a yes, a no, or yes with conditions, and it contributes to the overall assessment of whether someone is fit and proper to hold a license.
Episode 13: Firearm Authority Health Examinations
Q: Who needs to complete the Firearm Authority health examination and when does it apply to new versus existing license holders?
New applicants must complete the health assessment as part of applying for a license, while existing license holders will be contacted gradually and will need to complete a health examination over a five-year rollout, with annual checks for those over 80.
Episode 12: Firearms Training
Q: Do you have any tips for anyone doing this training, sir?
Engage with the online course because it will be enjoyable and essential for licensing; completing it promptly ensures you can move forward with your application and become a safe, compliant firearm owner.
