Al suo rientro in Italia don Gnocchi è impegnato nella Resistenza e nell’aiuto alle vittime della guerra. A partire dal dopoguerra, dedicherà la sua intera esistenza alla creazione di opere assistenziali al servizio di orfani e mutilati.
Gennaio 1943. E’ l’inizio della ritirata di Russia e delle “marce del ritorno” per i pochi sopravvissuti alla controffensiva sovietica. Don Carlo riesce a tornare a casa ma la sua vita cambierà per sempre.
Tornato a Milano dopo l’esperienza al fronte, nel 1942 don Carlo chiede e ottiene di partire per la campagna di Russia. E’ l’inizio di una tragica impresa che condurrà alla morte migliaia di soldati italiani.
Il giovane Carlo, dopo aver perso il padre e i fratelli maggiori, entra in seminario. Ordinato sacerdote nel 1925, nel 1941 parte per il fronte greco-albanese come cappellano degli alpini.
