Your Healthspan Is Already Decided, And It’s Not in Your Blood Tests
Q: Right, and VO2 max being fundamental—could you unpack VO2 max for someone not familiar with it?
VO2 max is the body's ability to utilize oxygen during sustained effort; it reflects cardiorespiratory power and the efficiency of energy production at the cellular level. It's a key engine metric, but even a high VO2 max doesn't guarantee overall functional resilience if other domains are weak. The idea is to view VO2 max as part of a broader functional portfolio.
Your Healthspan Is Already Decided, And It’s Not in Your Blood Tests
Q: Scott, can you walk us through the five domains of function and why they must be viewed together?
The five domains are strength and power, cardiovascular and recovery, mobility and balance, flexibility and structure, and neuromotor and cognition. Each domain peaks and declines at different times, and together they form a portfolio-like view of functional health where weaknesses in one area pull others down. VO2 max is important but not sufficient alone; a holistic approach across all five domains provides the best prediction of health span and longevity.
Your Body Shape Doesn't Define Your Worth
Q: What has personal experience taught you about healthcare and obesity stigma?
That stigma in healthcare drives people away from seeking care; recognizing obesity as a chronic condition and focusing on compassionate, evidence-based care can improve access and outcomes, while language changes can reduce shame.
Your Body Shape Doesn't Define Your Worth
Q: Why is obesity treated as a chronic condition rather than a lifestyle issue?
Because obesity arises from an interplay of genetics, biology, environment, trauma, and social determinants, making it a complex, long-term health condition rather than a simple choice; treatments should address health outcomes and ongoing care, not just weight loss.
Medical Affairs: The Navigation System Pharma Doesn't Talk About
Q: What is one practical takeaway for cross-functional teams preparing for a launch?
Excellent collaborative collaboration; truly understand the needs of other functions and work hand in hand toward a shared overarching goal, ensuring Medical, Commercial, and R&D align on data-driven decisions.
