店主の加茂さんが、ノーベル文学賞作家ジョゼ・サラマーゴの小説「象の旅」から命名した書店で、
なんと私は、41年前の自分の卒論『仏伝による釈尊の苦悩と解脱についての一考察』の一節を読むところからこの夕べを始めました。
卒論のために、というよりは自分の生き方がわからず、すがるような思いで旅をしたインド。釈尊が悟りを得たといわれるブッダ・ガヤには、これまで３度訪れています。

『動物哲学物語 ナイス実存』『幸運であるトムとセセリチョウの世界』を携えての、朗読の旅が始まりました。
最初に訪れたのは、岩手県釜石市の「またたび書店」さんです。 私はかつて、東日本大震災で津波の被害にあった印刷所に残っていた「活字」から詩を作る
「足りない活字のための言葉展」に詩人として参加したことがあります。
今回の旅では、十数年ぶりにその作品「あめふらし」を朗読しました。
また、『動物哲学物語 ナイス実存』からはインド水牛の娘をヒロインに据えた「寄り添う心」を披露しました。

口角があがり、笑っているような表情に見えることから
「世界一幸福な」と形容される動物、クオッカワラビー。
この動物の笑顔にあやかりたいと、生息地の西オーストラリア州ロットネスト島には世界中から観光客がやってきます。
「笑顔の秘密」と題された今回の物語に登場するのは、
一度も笑ったことがない（笑顔には見えない）ために「ブアイソ君」というあだ名までついてしまったクオッカです。
集団の標準から外れてしまった彼には、いったいどんな秘密があるのでしょう。

答えることは可能でしょうか？
おそらく、詩人によって、文学者によって、その定義や成立線の感覚は異なるものです。
むしろ、定義など存在しないとした方が詩的であると言えるかも知れません。
とはいえ、詩を紡ぐ者にとって、自由という大海は何かの力を与えてくれるものではありません。
表現の責任は、それぞれのルールや必須要素があって生まれるものです。
