This is a short daily podcast, where we go through an exegesis of the gospel reading from the current day's Mass. The Catholic Church teaches that in order to understand the Scriptures, we must start with the literal sense - in other words, how the original hearers of the text would have understood it. That is our aim in this podcast - to help understand what the gospel writers (and more important... more

  • Succinct and impactful!

I’ve been listening to the daily gospel ex of Jesus, which I originally found on the hollow app for more than six months now. I listen to the daily readings, and then this podcast. What I like most is the context provided around the different gospels and who they were writing the gospels for, as well as the cultural context in the time, the gospels were written in the information about Jewish culture. The podcast is written straight to the point packed with information and it’s made such a diffe... more

  • Sort of “daily”

Many episodes are recycled from previous episodes and many are now behind a paywall. Nice starting point for a quick exegesis.

  • Dive Deeper

Have heard these readings numerous times growing up Catholic, but through the podcast able to dive deeper and learn how the catechism has been developed from the Gospels. Really great and doesn't get overly scholarly nor long in length.

  • Don’t miss this!

I’ve been listening to this daily for the past 6 months, and frequently for at least 2 years before that. I absolutely love it. It’s educational but very accessible. I have theology degree and yet I have learned so much from this! I just wish he would do the other Mass readings as well (currently it is just the Gospel). Perhaps he will eventually be able to expand his offerings.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

March 2026 Q&A
Q: Ali asked about Mark 10:18 and whether it supports the view of total depravity and how good works fit into salvation.
Jesus' statement that no one is good except God alone is explained to mean that true goodness belongs to God, and human goodness is a participated, not inherent, quality. The host references Catholic Answers' explanation and argues that Jesus identifies himself with divine goodness, while human beings can perform acts of goodness through grace, not as autonomous sources of goodness.
March 2026 Q&A
Q: Is there an article on how the four Gospels came to be, and what theories exist about their formation?
There is no official Catholic teaching that mandates one single theory; the Catholic Church emphasizes apostolic origin. Introductory Catholic resources like the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible and the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture can help frame the discussion, while acknowledging the range of scholarly theories and the need to approach them carefully.
March 2026 Q&A
Q: What do you mean by Essene house and what is the Essene connection to Luke 22:7-13?
The Essenes were a Jewish community with some ascetic practices, sometimes discussed in relation to biblical events. The host explains that this is a scholarly speculation discussed in a Patreon episode, noting that some scholars connect certain clues to the Essenes and that such discussions are explored with Catholic theological perspectives, while acknowledging disputes and the need for cautious study.
March 2026 Q&A
Q: Barbara asked about forgiveness after confession and whether God's forgiveness depends on others' approval.
God's forgiveness in the sacrament of confession is complete when the priest grants absolution, independent of other people's forgiveness. However, reconciliation with the person harmed can be important, and Jesus teaches that forgiving others is connected to receiving God's forgiveness; practical steps include seeking reconciliation with the person if possible and consulting a local priest for guidence on conscience and repentance.
March 2026 Q&A
Q: Where would be a good place to start to learn more that is also in line with Catholic teachings?
Start with a solid scholarly English translation that aims to be literal without being woodenly literal, such as the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition. For deeper study, consider Catholic scholarly resources like the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible for notes and translation context, and then the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture for verse-by-verse analysis, while ensuring you're using the correct, up-to-date editions.
