前些日子突然陷入閱讀情緒的低潮，一堆書拿到手裡，看不下兩頁就卡住了。新書看不下，於是轉念想想，不如把埋在電子書閱讀器裡多年的一堆老書翻出來看看。找來找去，挖出了一本約翰．史卡奇（John Scalzi）的科幻小說《星艦求生日誌》，一看之下，大為著迷。看完之後，欲罷不能，又把他另一本早期作品《垂暮戰爭》一口氣讀完，同樣覺得非常痛快。但今天，我們就先來談談他的《星艦求生日誌》。

約莫十年前，看過一部印象深刻的小說《世界就是這樣結束的》（On the Beach），這本末日小說講述的是第三次世界大戰後，北半球因核戰全毀，輻射塵逐漸南飄，身處在南半球的澳洲居民也將面對無可逆轉的死亡結局。那是一本非常蒼涼、寧靜，又充滿著悲傷與詩意的小說，非常非常好看。十多年來，閱讀這本書的記憶時常浮上心頭。但我除了不時揣想人類面對集體滅亡時的心境外，更常思索著，如果把這本書所描述的時間點稍微往前推一點，也就是核戰剛爆發時，那個世界會是什麼樣的景況？
