Carly’s Story: Triple Negative, BRCA, and Finding Courage After Everything Changed
Q: Carly, welcome. Can you give us a quick overview of your own cancer journey?
I had a strong family history of breast cancer on my mom's side, which made me familiar with the disease, but my diagnosis at 37 with triple negative breast cancer came as a shock. I underwent chemotherapy first, then a bilateral mastectomy with a DIEP reconstruction using my own abdominal tissue, followed by adjuvant therapy. I also learned I carry BRCA mutations, which influenced testing and future risk-reducing decisions. The journey included navigating private versus NHS care, finding an expert team, and ultimately focusing on survivorship and mental wellbeing.
Charlayne: Holding Space on the Front Line of Breast Cancer Care
Q: Charlayne, is there anything in terms of advice you could give people when they're going into a breast cancer appointment?
Prepare a list of questions, consider bringing someone to take notes or recording the session if possible, and ask to be introduced to the team so you don't feel alone in the room. Take time to process, and don't feel pressured to rush decisions—information overload is common, so use follow-up conversations to digest what's been said.
Lisa: Pink Hair, Purpose and the Power of Small Charities
Q: How can listeners help or get involved with Pink Ribbon Foundation?
Visit pinkribbonfoundation.org.uk, reach out via email, or connect via Instagram; involvement can be financial, skill-based, or through partnerships that align with their mission.
Lisa: Pink Hair, Purpose and the Power of Small Charities
Q: What makes Pink Ribbon Foundation different, and what are the next steps for the charity?
The foundation is small, proudly so, and its strength lies in a direct, transparent approach that prioritizes frontline charities and practical support for people diagnosed with breast cancer. The next steps involve careful growth to preserve ownership and impact, while continuing to secure funding through sponsorships and gifts, and expanding collaborations.
Lisa: Pink Hair, Purpose and the Power of Small Charities
Q: What's your definition of courage?
Courage means having fear and choosing to act anyway, especially when stepping out of your comfort zone and continuing to move forward with support from others.
