  • The Past and the Future

I just recently found this show. I wish I had found it sooner. My Dad would have loved it! He made his transition to Paradise two weeks ago but he would

have loved these interviews. My Dad was Old School and would have enjoyed listening to Boots O’Neal. And the interviews with the Halls, both Shannon and Whitney, was terrific. Thank you for putting out a quality product.

  • True cowboys

I stumbled across this podcast by accident but man what a gem. I just got through listening to the interview with Boots O’Neal what a cowboy.

Ross does a wonderful job in his interviews pulling the stories out of these humble hero’s to share the life lessons they have learned. Its comes straight from the horses mouth. Documenting history before its lost or rewritten. Keep up the great work.

  • Auroes ranch question.

I listened to a very fascinating episode with Ed Ashurst. He mentioned a lot of ranches and at the end you asked him if he were 18 which ranch would he work for and he said Auroes. I’ve looked a number of times to inquire about getting hired without finding the ranch. Auroes populates aurora on google and even spell check. I was hoping I could gain your attention and get a link to the website.

Keep up the amazing interviews. The stories are awesome and I love how it pulls me into another world ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mark Gardiner and his family raise Black Angus bulls near Ashland, Kansas
Q: What innovations transformed the ranch's breeding program?
A major turning point was Henry Gardiner's adoption of artificial insemination in the 1960s, followed by the transition to a total AI program in 1964 and the later adoption of embryo transfer starting around 1987 and expanding in 1990. This moved the operation toward using the best bulls and donor cows, leveraging BLUP/EPD concepts and rigorous record-keeping to drive multi-trait excellence, calving ease, and profitability.

Q: How did Gardiner Angus Ranch get started and evolve in Kansas?
The story begins with Henry Gardiner and his descendants settling in Clark County, Kansas in the late 1800s, building a homestead, enduring droughts and fires, and gradually expanding from a mixed farming and sheep operation into a prominent Angus seed-stock program under the leadership of Henry's son Ralph and later Robert/Mark's generation. The key turning points include acquiring land, embracing Angus cattle, and shifting from phenotypic selection to data-driven, AI-based genetics.
