Now I'm down a rabbit hole of reading about tall poppy syndrome in NZ. We do make ourselves small.
Lovely to listen to Duncan and Jane again too. Glad Jane came home.
I am really enjoying this Podcast. As a NZ expat living in Australia it addresses all my concerns about what would happen if I did move home. But it also generates discussion about New Zealand’s persona as a “utopia”which really still has a many issues rooted in our colonial past in regards to displacement, migration, tall poppy syndrome and more. I highly recommend this series. I hope they continue to make more!
As a Kiwi who hasn’t lived in Aotearoa since 2009 but planning a move back next spring, it is really informative to hear these stories. Overseas Kiwis are awesome - we’re such a talented bunch! (Oh and you Kiwis onshore are alright, too ;-))
With 2/3rds of the corn content but all of the love this is a great podcast.
Wonderful to have so many kiwi’s returning, I wonder though if you have come home to NZ but continue to work remotely for a job that is based overseas, are you paying tax in both countries? As the government runs out of money to foot the $2million a day quarantine hotels why are we footing that bill if people are choosing to return rather than having to return because they have lost their jobs.
