  • Great, but…I have a beef

I really love this show and usually find it fantastic and informative. I love the energy of the hosts and feel like they each bring strengths to the show and interviews. I’d give this a solid five stars except for one major concern — I can’t help but cringe every time they go on and on about “sustainable” beef practices in the Southwest. That’s like talking about “clean coal.” It just doesn’t make sense from an environmental perspective. There’s just no way to make cows in the desert sustainab... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Galloping Goats and Grazing Management
Q: What have you learned about the goats' grazing preferences and how do you measure success in this project?
Goats have a broad but selective palate; they prefer certain invasives like Siberian elm, Russian olive, and salt cedar, with some seasons more favorable for specific plants. Success is tracked through year-to-year observations of invasive reduction, native plant resurgence, and overall fuels management, aided by fencing strategies and eventual soil amendments.
Galloping Goats and Grazing Management
Q: How did the Sandia Environment Department learn about Galloping Goats Grazing and decide to try it?
The initiative started during COVID when Max Wade pivoted his pumpkin patch into goat-powered weed control; a forester from New Mexico State Forestry connected him with Scialdone, and the Sandia Pueblo embraced the idea quickly due to its alignment with weed control and fuels reduction.
Targeted Grazing and Virtual Fencing
Q: Can you explain to our listeners what Cooperative Extension Specialists do and how that differs from a typical academic role?
Cooperative Extension Specialists bridge the university with on-the-ground communities, translating research into practical tools and communicating land-management questions back to the university to guide research and extension work.
Wildfire and Post-Fire Recovery
Q: What is the most exciting part of your work?
The guest finds outdoor field work and interacting with managers and students most rewarding, describing how walking through a treatment unit and viewing landscapes through a manager's perspective is particularly fulfilling, while recognizing challenges and emotional aspects of long-term landscape change.
Tiny But Mighty: The Critical Role of Pollinators
Q: How can park managers use your findings to protect pollinators?
Managers can prioritize invasive plant removal and habitat restoration in high-richness or rare-species areas, adjust grazing and fire regimes to avoid peak flowering, and integrate park data with virtual datasets to monitor longer-term shifts.
