Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#82 Want to run faster? Stop making these mistakes
Q: What are the three main mistakes you see runners making when incorporating strength training?
The three main mistakes are: using lightweight, high-rep training that doesn't optimize strength gains; neglecting lower-body work by focusing too much on upper body due to fatigue concerns; and training to failure too often, which hampers recovery and run performance. Instead, prioritize lower-body strength with heavier loads in the 3-8 rep range, include targeted leg and glute work, and back off to within a couple reps of failure to balance recovery with gains.
#84 Coaching In The Real World with Aqeel Khan
Q: What drives your coaching philosophy and how do you apply it with clients?
His philosophy centers on creating a welcoming environment, delivering real, effective training, and building strong relationships. He emphasizes patience, self-awareness, service, and principle-driven action as core, and stresses aligning with each client's needs and values rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all approach.
#84 Coaching In The Real World with Aqeel Khan
Q: Tell us a little bit about your coaching journey and how you got to Sands Fitness.
Aqeel describes starting in university with bioscience, moving through Emirates Airline which shaped his values, then taking on part-time coaching before advancing to Sands Fitness. He highlights CCP/OPEX as pivotal in shaping his coaching philosophy, while noting that formal qualifications are valuable but not the sole determinant of effective coaching.
#88 How To Get Really, Really Strong with Matt Henry
Q: What are the guidelines for getting strong?
Focus on two aspects: moving well and bracing correctly; learn to brace with proper technique, use a belt for feedback, and progressively overload while maintaining control. Also, structure training with cycles, deloads, and patience rather than chasing constant maxes.
#86 Navigating food addiction in a world that markets junk with Rory Brown
Q: Rory, before we get into that, could you give a quick overview of your background and what led you to focus on the psychology of eating and nutrition?
Rory shares his 17-year journey in health and fitness, transitioning from personal training to exploring the psychological drivers of eating disorders, which led to clinical work in an eating disorder clinic and later online practice in Dubai. This background informs his holistic approach that ties nutrition, psychology, and behavior together to help clients achieve lasting change.
