The sound mixing is very strange in this podcast... environmental sounds often overwhelm the dialogue, and the placement of sfx and voices is sometimes a bit weird. the voice acting is good, but i never felt like i really cared about the characters or the story. i'm not a fan of political dramas, so that is part of it. it also was not a convincing world to me... so ya, for me this is another example of good production value, but not enough to back that up, and too much of a film-like focus witho... more
There are two narrative styles here, the journalistic sounding one and then the first person dramatic one. The sound gets a bit muddled at times with the sound effects and ambience overpowering the dialog. And the 3D sound is maybe a bit overused so some sounds move that would make more sense if they were stationary, and vice versa. But it’s cool to listen to see how that works. The plot was maybe more of an afterthought? It left me thinking more about the recording techniques and stuff.
I love so much about this podcast. It’s well-acted, incredibly rich in sound, and set in a world I’d love to explore more.
I was hoping to add this one to my list, Evolicious Podcast Fiction right here on Podchaser. But due to two fatal flaws, I cannot.
One of the flaws is forgivable: it’s light on exposition, leaving (in my opinion) too much to the imagination, with little more that sounds (rich, immersive sounds) for what seems like minutes on end. I think I kinda know what was happening, ... more
could not have said better myself:
"Calais 2037 is among the more brooding and audio dramas on offer, sacrificing spectacular special (sound) effects for a story that drills away at your conscience relentlessly over 6 episodes. From behind-closed-doors power-mongering to scenes of flat-out physical and psychological torture, Calais 2037 may be the most accurate and intriguing depiction of a political dystopia to be encountered in audio fiction. The most accurate and intriguing depiction of a political dystopia to be encountered in audio fiction. Dark, gritty and beautifully produced with truly immersive audio.
The setting is Europe 2037 and we're subjected to a grim picture of a splintered United Kingdom in the throes of Orwellian counter-espionage. This gripping dystopian podcast brings nightmarish political possibilities right to the fore at a time of unprecedented surveillance. Binaural audio (3D sound) is a largely untapped format, and the attention to detail in the sound design is truly admirable. Top class.
I loved this. Great storytelling and awesome use of binaural sound.
If only it didn’t feel like something that might actually happen. 🤔
Aside from the political intrigue and spycraft, the longing for a country you can’t return to is a theme that is beautifully expressed here and I commend the ability of the creators to tap into that via performance and dialogue that's confined to Calais. We have no idea what England is like in 2037 but it doesn’t matter. Dream or nightmare, it’s home. And of course the production quality is impeccable. From the waves upon the shores of Calais to the drone of vehicles and the blast of ship horns ... more
Unlike anything else I’ve listened to. The binaural audio makes the whole experience unnervingly close and atmospheric. Excited to see what they come up with next.
I won’t say that I think the details of the premise hold together completely. But the longing for a country you can’t return to is a theme that is beautifully expressed here and I commend the ability of the creators to tap into that via performance and dialogue alone confined to Calais. Always a bit worried with political dramas. Just listened to ep1 &2 back to back and I’m hooked!
Cool storyline and a unique sound design!
Top of the line. Just go listen - you can´t let go till it´s finished.
Loving this! Really excited for more :)
Found myself feeling exceedingly patriotic. Great use of music throughout. Excellent performances, fantastic production.
Awesome! Hooked from ep one!
