那如果同時發現甲烷呢？還是不行。
液態水、有機分子、氧氣、甲烷，
甚至一些看起來很像生命活動造成的化學訊號，
都可能讓一個世界變得非常可疑。
但「可疑」，距離「找到生命」，
還有很長一段路。
因為生命會製造這些東西，
沒有生命的自然環境，
也可能製造它們。
截至目前，我們仍然沒有任何被科學界普遍接受、
足以證明地球之外存在生命的證據。

外星人到底在哪裡？
這個問題有一個很麻煩的地方，
因為我們根本不知道外星生命應該長什麼樣子。
截至目前，人類只知道一個確定存在生命的世界——地球。
所以在真的跑去宇宙裡找生命以前，我們得先回答一個更基本的問題：
生命到底需要什麼？
液態水？碳和其他化學原料？持續供應的能量？
還是數億、甚至數十億年穩定演化的時間？
更麻煩的是，就算這些條件全部湊齊，也不代表生命一定會出現。
我們甚至還不知道，四十多億年前的地球，
究竟是怎麼從一堆沒有生命的化學物質，
一步一步走到第一... more
1930 年，一個二十四歲、甚至還沒念過大學的年輕人，在兩張底片之間，看見了一個微弱的光點跳了一下。
那個光點，後來有了一個名字——冥王星。
湯博出生在農家，沒有受過正式的天文訓練，自己研磨鏡片、自己製作望遠鏡，再把自己畫下的火星與木星觀測圖寄給洛威爾天文台。
原本只是想請專業天文學家看看自己的觀測成果，沒想到這封信，直接把他送進了洛威爾天文台，也讓他後來接下尋找 Planet X 的工作。
他先發現了一顆行星，才去念大學。
但湯博和冥王星的故事，並沒有停在 1930 年。

前兩集，我們一直在找那些看不見的行星。
有時看母恆星怎麼晃，
有時看星光怎麼變暗，
再從一連串痕跡裡，推論行星藏在哪裡。
這一次，天文學家不想再只看行星留下的痕跡，
而是要直接把行星本身的光，從母恆星旁邊分離出來。
問題是，行星可能比母恆星暗上幾百萬、甚至幾十億倍，
還緊緊貼在它旁邊。
有時候，行星其實早就出現在影像裡，
我們卻根本認不出來。
最近，研究團隊就在 Beta Pictoris 系統裡找到一顆新行星。
它比同伴暗上一百倍，
