一場馬拉松，通常是 42.195 公里。
但天文人的馬拉松，
可以一步都不用跑。
你只需要帶著望遠鏡，
從太陽下山一路熬到隔天日出，
然後在天亮以前，
找到 110 個天體。
這就是「梅西爾馬拉松」。
問題是，這 110 個目標散落在整片天空，
有些太陽一下山就準備下班，
有些則要等到天快亮才肯出現。
所以你不能從 M1、M2、M3 一路照編號找，
而是得事先安排路線、挑季節、看月相、選地點，
還要祈禱雲不要突然跑來參賽。

你一定聽過 M31、M42、M87。
但你有沒有想過，
前面的那個「M」到底是什麼？
答案不是什麼神秘天文代號，
只是一個人的名字——梅西爾(Messier)。
十八世紀的梅西爾，最愛做的事情就是找彗星。
問題是天空中總有一堆模模糊糊、
看起來很像彗星，
但死都不肯動的東西一直騙他。
所以他乾脆做了一張清單：
「這些都不是彗星，下次不要再被騙。」
結果兩百多年後，
這份原本拿來排除干擾的名單，
反而變成了最經典的深空觀測清單之一。
星團、星雲、超新星殘骸、... more
如果有一天，天文學家在一顆遙遠行星的大氣裡發現了氧氣。
我們可以宣布找到外星生命了嗎？不行。
那如果同時發現甲烷呢？還是不行。
液態水、有機分子、氧氣、甲烷，
甚至一些看起來很像生命活動造成的化學訊號，
都可能讓一個世界變得非常可疑。
但「可疑」，距離「找到生命」，
還有很長一段路。
因為生命會製造這些東西，
沒有生命的自然環境，
也可能製造它們。
截至目前，我們仍然沒有任何被科學界普遍接受、
足以證明地球之外存在生命的證據。

外星人到底在哪裡？
這個問題有一個很麻煩的地方，
因為我們根本不知道外星生命應該長什麼樣子。
截至目前，人類只知道一個確定存在生命的世界——地球。
所以在真的跑去宇宙裡找生命以前，我們得先回答一個更基本的問題：
生命到底需要什麼？
液態水？碳和其他化學原料？持續供應的能量？
還是數億、甚至數十億年穩定演化的時間？
更麻煩的是，就算這些條件全部湊齊，也不代表生命一定會出現。
我們甚至還不知道，四十多億年前的地球，
究竟是怎麼從一堆沒有生命的化學物質，
