Great show but I just wish the episodes were longer than a few minutes…also the episodes abruptly cut off…they just end

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Bookmakers concerned over proposed betting tax
Q: What does the industry propose to curb problematic gambling beyond taxation?
The industry supports responsible gambling measures such as loss limits, cooling-off periods, self-exclusion options, age and FICA verification, and collaboration with social grants databases to ensure vulnerable groups aren't targeted, while continuing to fund responsible gambling initiatives through existing foundations.
Bookmakers concerned over proposed betting tax
Q: What are the regulatory and constitutional tensions you foresee between national and provincial governments over taxation of gambling?
Gambling is a concurrent competency with provincial licensing and fees, so a national overlay could create jurisdictional conflicts unless norms and standards are harmonized and co-ordinated across all provinces.
Bookmakers concerned over proposed betting tax
Q: In your submissions, you also argue that this would be a final nail in the coffin for some operators. How could that be the case given existing advertising and marketing around gambling?
Despite heavy advertising, the tax increase would raise operating costs significantly, especially for smaller operators, and the increased cost base would not be offset by current revenue patterns; it would jeopardize viability for some operators while ring-fencing for social programs remains uncertain.
Bookmakers concerned over proposed betting tax
Q: Initial thoughts, when Treasury talks about a 20% betting tax, why do you say the real burden on bookmakers could climb to as much as 40%?
The current 12% effective net tax plus 6.5% provincial tax and 15% PAT on gross betting turnover create a combined burden around 18.5%, and adding a further 20% national tax brings the total to approximately 38.5% to 39%, which could stifle the industry and push operators to the edge or out of market.
Unwanted presence? What powers do private security officers actually have?
Q: What powers does a private security have on a public road?
They do not have police powers on public roads; their authority is limited to contractually defined duties, and any police-like action such as arrests must follow statutory routes like citizen's arrest under law, with force limited to what is reasonable and proportionate.
