Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep.65 Daedelus
Q: What's your perspective on the balance between analog warmth and digital precision?
I view them as two ends of a spectrum that can coexist and complement each other. Analog brings human nuance and imperfections, while digital tools offer precision and flexibility. The magic happens when I blend both approaches to create sounds that feel organic yet technologically advanced.
Ep.65 Daedelus
Q: How did your exposure to the Monome influence your live performances?
Seeing Brian Crabtree use a small, blank-button grid showed me a future where complex sampling could be performed non-linearly. I adopted the Monome because it gave a tactile, immediate way to rip and reassemble audio on stage, which fit my vision of a live, expressive, improvised set.
Ep.65 Daedelus
Q: When did you first get into production and what sparked that shift from DJing to live production?
I moved from simply DJing at raves to producing by exploring early samplers, then the Monome, which allowed non-linear live manipulation of sounds. That shift was driven by curiosity about how to shape a continuous, evolving performance rather than just mixing tracks. Over time, I embraced collage-based approaches and started treating production as an art of transforming and recombining audio in real time.
Ep.66 La Maguana
Q: What is the attitude or identity of your music, and how do you represent TJ (Tijuana) through your songs?
The band aims to honor TJ's culture and stories, using songs like La Maguana de Tijuana to tell personal and community narratives while blending Afro-Latin roots with modern, hypnotic Cumbia.
Ep.66 La Maguana
Q: How did La Maguana start and evolve into its current lineup?
The project began with Omar and Rodrigo casually jamming and recording; over time friends from the local Sweetwater studio joined, creating a rotating yet cohesive nine-piece group with a shared focus on traditional Cumbia mixed with contemporary influences.
