Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Realities in the Systems That Produce Our Food with James Slaby
Q: How has OT evolved with the push to cloud and digital transformation?
James explains that OT is slowly embracing cloud concepts, but adoption is cautious due to risk of breaking legacy equipment; the focus is on secure, partial cloud integration that preserves air gaps where necessary while enabling centralized visibility.
Francisco Martin-Rayo: How AI Is Forecasting the Future of Food
Q: What is this work really about—peace or a new battleground for you?
It's about solving problems. I described past projects aimed at education and information access, and for Helios it's about addressing agricultural disruptions and price volatility to make the food system more resilient. It's a long-term mission to create positive impact through technology and data.
Francisco Martin-Rayo: How AI Is Forecasting the Future of Food
Q: Your background, though, let's give a little more detail about how you got here.
I started multiple technology companies, including experiences with importing avocados from Mexico, which exposed me to the food supply system and climate-related changes. That history led me to Helios AI because I saw a real need for predicting disruptions and prices in agriculture, and I believed technology could help address it.
Third-Generation Farmer Jake Leguee on Technology, Risk, and Feeding the World
Q: Can you describe a typical day or season and how technology factors in from seed to harvest?
Jake describes a season-long workflow where machinery, coordination, and logistics dominate the day, with technology playing a central role in seed placement, crop protection, harvest sequencing, moisture management, and data collection; while there is no single typical day, the season is a continuum of tech-enabled tasks across planting, growing, and harvesting.
Third-Generation Farmer Jake Leguee on Technology, Risk, and Feeding the World
Q: What keeps you farming, Jake? Why do you continue to farm across generations?
Jake explains that farming is a multi-generational family calling with deep ties to land, community, and a sense of purpose, and he believes agriculture offers diverse, meaningful career opportunities beyond farming itself; the drive comes from a mix of heritage, interest in agronomy and finance, and a commitment to providing for future generations.
