You probably know Ed Helms from his unforgettable turns in The Hangover movies, The Office, and a laundry list of era-defining comedies, but what you might not know is that he shreds bluegrass music, too. (Actually, if you’ve seen The Office, you’ll ... more
This time on Before Your Very Ears, hosts Sean Watkins and Peter Harper give love a chance. Helping them learn the ways of love is Nick Thune, comedian and musician, who spearheads the songwriting session—but not before sharing some of the best bird-... more
Ever wondered how songwriters capture scenery and stories so vivid that they seem to jump out of the song and into real life? Cary Brothers can offer some insight. In addition to releasing three full-length solo albums, the Los Angeles-based musician... more
Mississippi-born, Los Angeles-based musician and songwriter Garrison Starr has been recording and releasing music since the early ’90s. The veteran rocker is an expert on creative expression—but also on navigating the “ballsack of an industry” that i... more
I love watching Sean + Pete play live at Largo with many of the musicians on this podcast. They’re so relaxed, funny, thoughtful, and immensely talented, and this podcast feels like following them from the stage back to the studio. Hearing how they put a song together inspires me to go write my own music. I do think people need to realize that there is a ton of mutual respect and, in many cases (if not all), well established friendship, among these musicians. This isn’t two random hosts inviting... more
I have greatly enjoyed this podcast. Keep in mind most of the musicians coming on this are friends with Sean and/or Pete, so it’s a different interaction from someone they do not know. The episode with Garrison was particularly charming because she is so sweet and such a talent. I love hearing the process of of figuring out the lyrics. I hope they will do a showcase of all the songs at Largo. I would love if they do another season of this will more Largo alums, like Jackson Brown or Benmont Tenc... more
I like the idea of this podcast but it is so poorly executed. The songwriting behemoth’s they have as guests are put on the spot to write something with to many people in the room. This is not a curtain I needed to see pulled back. I love Theo Katzman but his episode got totally hijacked by another songwriter with super heavy baggage. I also despise the ads in the middle of a creative thinking space. If you want to do this properly just make a record with these artists. Don’t subject fans of the... more
It’s hard to ruin anything associated with Madison Cunningham, but with their second episode—the only one I’ve listened to and am now likely to listen to—these guys have managed to pull it off. We’re promised this amazing musician/songwriter/singer collaborating with two guys to create a song on the spot and what we mostly get is two guys who won’t shut up and let us actually hear from her. It’s not only rude and annoying, it’s just plain boring—neither of them has anything interesting to say, t... more
