  • I love Dahlia

She always tries to make her show inclusive of everyone and understands that we can’t all use the expensive products and we’re all just doing our best out here. Also she’s in the PNW same region as me and has my same issues in the chicken yard😃 so I can relate to her problems and solutions

Timeless Wisdom for Chicken Keepers with Gary from Chickens Every Day
Q: What is your best piece of advice to ensure a good backyard chicken-keeping experience year-round?
Don't overextend the flock beyond what you can manage; prioritize air, water, and food quality, keep a safe and reasonably clean pen, provide protection from predators, and create a predictable routine that reduces stress for both birds and keeper.
Timeless Wisdom for Chicken Keepers with Gary from Chickens Every Day
Q: What is the best advice you have for someone coming home with their first batch of baby chicks?
Have a prepared setup: a proper brooder, a heater arrangement that allows chicks to move away if they get too warm, a safe and ventilated environment, and ready-to-use equipment and feed so they can settle in with minimal stress.
Timeless Wisdom for Chicken Keepers with Gary from Chickens Every Day
Q: For the very, very new chicken keeper, what is your first piece of wisdom that you would share during the research phase?
Think big, but start small: secure more space than you anticipate needing, start with a small number of chicks to learn their needs, and gradually expand as you gain experience so the process stays enjoyable rather than overwhelming.
The Health of Your Chicken's Butt is Actually Important
Q: How reliable is sexing chicks by neck hold to determine roosters vs hens?
This method is considered a myth or unreliable; hatcheries' sexing is difficult and you should wait for clearer indicators like comb size and egg-laying to determine sex.
The Health of Your Chicken's Butt is Actually Important
Q: A hen is lethargic and I fear illness; what should I do?
The host advises cautious observation, electrolyte support, possible internal infection, and suggests seeking veterinary care; do not panic, monitor for additional symptoms, and consider probiotic support.
