Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Backstory: Lauren Falcao Bergquist on High-quality Coffee Farmers in Uganda
Q: So another sort of a theme of your work. So the topic is agriculture, but a theme in a lot of your research is this idea of general equilibrium effects for like maybe a first year graduate student level.
When you start thinking about what's going to happen when you scale up programs and move into kind of policy impacts, a bunch of stuff is going to adjust, right? So prices are going to shift around. That's going to affect consumption, it's going to affect incentives for production that might affect local wages.
Backstory: Paul Christian on Balancing Equity and Efficiency in Agricultural Subsidies
Q: What advice would you give to PhD students designing their first field experiments?
Be open-minded, opportunistic, and engage with the problems that real-world actors are facing in agriculture and food security.
Backstory: Paul Christian on Balancing Equity and Efficiency in Agricultural Subsidies
Q: How do you balance the trade-offs between equity and efficiency in subsidy design?
It involves understanding the different needs of farmers and ensuring that subsidies do not only benefit larger farmers.
Backstory: Paul Christian on Balancing Equity and Efficiency in Agricultural Subsidies
Q: What drew you to economics and specifically agricultural economics?
I grew up in rural areas, and my interest in economics began in high school thanks to an engaging teacher.
Backstory: Maddie McKelway on Household Communication and Women's Employment
Q: Can you tell us more about the qualitative interviews and how you went about that?
We conducted one-on-one interviews with women in rural areas, ensuring that the conversations were honest and reflected individual opinions, avoiding group think.
