Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S2/EP7: Xander Duell (Pegg)
Q: How did the Van Dyke Parks collaboration come about?
A chance connection via mutual contacts led to the collaboration, with Parks writing strings and the project evolving around challenging, unconventional arrangements.
S2/EP7: Xander Duell (Pegg)
Q: When did you first start making music seriously, and what pulled you toward it?
A progression from early guitar interest through classic rock influences, with a strong emphasis on chords and harmonic exploration that defined his approach.
S2/EP4: Michael Younker
Q: What was the process like recording Mr. Communication with Johnny Couch and the Triathalon crew?
We used a mix of demo groundwork, MIDI parts, and live contributions; Johnny Couch brought tight charting and a collaborative workflow, then we built the track stem by stem in the studio.
S2/EP4: Michael Younker
Q: And that's how I got into that. And I think I just wanted to sing like Have You Ever Seen the Rain and similar sounds.
I leaned into the groove and the energy of older rock while keeping a sense of playfulness and not taking things too seriously.
S2/EP4: Michael Younker
Q: The Michael Younker two EPs, they're different, but they are carved out in this very classic garage, punky rock and roll kind of vein. Did you grow up playing that kind of music?
Yes, I started on bass and later moved to guitar, influenced by classic rock and punk; early bands and friends shaped my trajectory toward garage rock and a humor-filled approach to music.
