I desired to begin my journey through Homer's Iliad and Odyssey but I didn't know where to go. I stumbled across this podcast and I am so grateful I did. I'm only a few episodes in and I find this podcast so insightful. They make The Iliad approachable while still digging into deep themes and history.

  • Great Idea - Co-Host (Adam) is Unlistenable

The only reason this doesn’t go any lower is because i love the idea of this podcast and want to support at all cost

But Adam is atrocious and hard to suffer through, in order to get Deacon’s insight & discussion points

  • Great Podcast and Guests

Decided to mix some of the great books into my reading list last year and knew it would be beneficial to do so with a podcast to guide me. So glad I found this one! The hosts are a great example of the intellectual revival we should be having thanks to the internet and podcasting. I was pleasantly surprised that they’re involved Catholics as well.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Intro to the Odyssey with Dr. Patrick Deneen and Dr. Chad Pecknold (2024)
Q: What is the role of the canon and tradition in modern Great Books education?
Tradition is dynamic and organic, with new works joining the canon in conversation with predecessors, evolving through teachers, contexts, and faith commitments to deepen understanding rather than replacing the old with a fixed list.
Intro to the Odyssey with Dr. Patrick Deneen and Dr. Chad Pecknold (2024)
Q: How does Augustine influence the reading of classical texts like the Odyssey?
Augustine provides a critical framework that emphasizes truth and moral discernment, guiding readers to distinguish between genuine insight and deceptive claims in texts, while highlighting how Christian thought can illuminate classic narratives.
Intro to the Odyssey with Dr. Patrick Deneen and Dr. Chad Pecknold (2024)
Q: Why should we read Homer in the context of the Great Books today?
Homer anchors the Western tradition and helps readers understand foundational questions about home, humanity, and the relationship between humans and the divine, serving as a gateway to broader philosophical and theological inquiry.
Q&A on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight with Dr. Justin Jackson
Q: How should we read the Green Knight—as tempter, ally, or something more complex within Morgan Le Fay's schemes?
The Green Knight is portrayed as a complex figure who facilitates a moral trial under Fay's influence, offering paths of mercy and challenge that illuminate Gawain's character without reducing the figure to a single allegorical role.
Q&A on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight with Dr. Justin Jackson
Q: What is the significance of the girdle in both Gawain's moral tests and his final fate?
The girdle functions as a test of truth and trust; it exposes Gawain's cowardice and the limits of a perfect chivalric code when faced with mortal risk, and its withholding or revealing shapes the Green Knight's judgment and the poem's moral architecture.
