Det politiske livet på det siste halvdel av 1800-tallet var dominert av to politiske partier: Venstre og Høyre. Men blant arbeiderne kom et reelt ønske om et arbeidernes parti.
Den industrielle revolusjonen i Norge starter rundt 1850 og startet med oppbygning av tekstilindustrien. Dette førte til at tusenvis av mennesker flyttet inn til byene og til fabrikkene der. I Oslo ble det bygget betydelig med ny industri.
