Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

67. Frederic S Durbin - The Country Under Heaven: Underground Worlds, The Nature of The Western, and Analog Typewriters
Q: What inspired your initial writing?
Writing has just always been something that inspired me; I grew up in a house full of books, my mom was a librarian, and I just naturally loved them when I have parents that love books.
67. Frederic S Durbin - The Country Under Heaven: Underground Worlds, The Nature of The Western, and Analog Typewriters
Q: Did you leave because of the disaster?
No, in fact, I left when everything was fine. I had no idea about the disaster until I arrived in America and people began to ask me about it.
67. Frederic S Durbin - The Country Under Heaven: Underground Worlds, The Nature of The Western, and Analog Typewriters
Q: Do you see a lot of change during that time in the Japanese culture? Did it come closer to, let's say, America or further away?
I did see a lot of change during that time. The Japanese became much more used to a foreign presence in Japan and it became easier to live there with more Westerners entering the country.
67. Frederic S Durbin - The Country Under Heaven: Underground Worlds, The Nature of The Western, and Analog Typewriters
Q: What made you think of that particular type of ideal writing space?
When I was about seven or eight years old, my parents took me to Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, which I believe is still the longest known cave system in the world. That trip was hugely influential for me.
66. Alexander Boldizar - The Man Who Saw Seconds: Laplace's Demon, Asimov's Mule, and the Trolly Problem (2/2)
Q: What political structure would you choose if you were trying to make the most effective, long-term, survivable society?
I generally prefer a decentralized approach, as resilience in systems increases when decisions are pushed down to the lowest possible level.
