Actuarial Talk: Dan Gelderd
Q: What inspires your current work with Actuarial Collaborative Technology?
Dan aims to accelerate Python adoption in actuarial work by pre-building tools and methods and leveraging an open, shared ownership model to reward contributors, enabling scalable, licenseable products while maintaining collaborative innovation.
Actuarial Talk: Dan Gelderd
Q: What was EMB like in its early days?
EMB was like the wild west where young actuaries were expected to build, code, and deliver to clients with relatively little red tape, which accelerated learning and ownership but was very different from more controlled consulting environments.
Actuarial Talk: Dan Gelderd
Q: What sparked your transition from teaching to the actuarial world?
A head of maths at Westminster School identified a recruitment opportunity at Oxford/Cambridge colleges, which exposed Dan to a role in a leading school and ultimately steered him toward the actuarial field when he followed a friend into EMB.
Actuarial Talk: Peter Way
Q: What was it like balancing a startup, a cancer diagnosis, and a home renovation at the same time?
He describes the cancer diagnosis in 2022 during a startup phase, the grueling treatment and isolation, and a parallel home renovation disaster that compounded stress, illustrating resilience and determination to continue work despite extreme personal and professional challenges.
Actuarial Talk: Peter Way
Q: How did you end up moving from teaching into actuarial work, and what were the early steps?
After deciding teaching wasn't the right long-term path, Pete explored maths-centered roles, interviewed for Ladbrokes and EY, joined EY as an older graduate, and then built hands-on actuarial grounding through reserving, capital, and various projects before transitioning toward industry roles.
