  • Great podcast!

Amazing podcast with some very good limited series as well. The ‘86 and films at 40 series have been great to relive all those movies from my childhood and the new Strange New Wednesdays pairs well with one of the best written Star Trek series ever!

  • A binge-worthy podcast

The guys at the equally awesome Surely You Can’t Be Serious podcast first pointed me toward A Film By .., and I’m so glad they did. Every episode features Jeff, Brad, and others engaging in a detailed, nuanced discussion of various films, prominent and more obscure alike, in a convivial, conversational tone. It’s the audio equivalent of sitting around a bar table with your pals hashing out a list of your favorite films. Highly recommended!

  • Chicken Soup for the Film Buff 🎬

This podcast does a great job highlighting some of the greatest parts of movies (e.g. “Ack Ack” in Mar’s Attacks) or provocative perspectives on characters and plot points; like who’s the good guy in Ferris Bueller’s Day off or that the coolest bully of all time is James Spader in Pretty in Pink! They also incorporate fun games, like which 86’ character would you like to see appear in the same movie; my own contribution, Sgt. Tackleberry (Police Academy 3) and Jack Burton (Big Trouble in Little ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A Script By: Stanley Kubrick - Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Q: What makes the opening act of Dr. Strangelove so effective?
The host and guest discuss how the act introduces multiple perspectives and builds a sense of a system spiraling toward catastrophe, rather than following a single hero, which heightens tension and satire.
A Script By: Budd Schulberg - On the Waterfront
Q: Why is Father Barry's crucifixion speech considered the defining moment of the screenplay?
Because it reframes the narrative from a simple crime story to a moral indictment of fear and silence, linking personal choice to the community's fate and articulating the film's central themes in a single powerful moment.
A Script By: Budd Schulberg - On the Waterfront
Q: What makes act three so effective and how does it force Terry to confront his choices?
Act three collapses the earlier ambiguity by placing Terry under relentless pressure from every direction, culminating in a choice that exposes the true cost of his silence and loyalty and ultimately defines his character arc.
A Script By: James Cameron - The Terminator
Q: What makes Act One suspenseful despite limited dialogue?
Brad notes that Cameron's use of visual storytelling and precise actions creates tension without exposition, allowing audience inferences to drive engagement.
A Script By: James Cameron - The Terminator
Q: And at what point did you feel Sarah truly became the center of the movie?
Amber explains that once Reese reveals the broader future and Sarah realizes her pivotal role, the character shifts from a victim to a potential hero, with the weight of humanity resting on her shoulders.
