We’ve Linked up YouTube and RSS-Based Podcasts (& Added YouTube Charts)

It's fair to say that video content in podcasting is having a moment. An increasing number of podcasts are making an effort to record video content and upload it to YouTube.

Spotify also recently crossed more than 100,000 video podcasts.

YouTube graduated their new RSS ingest support out of beta earlier this month and shows added to YouTube are also available in YouTube Music, no doubt boosting its appeal as possibly the most satisfying platform for podcast consumption.

But the two worlds remain barely connected. Unless your favorite podcast links to their YouTube channel in their show notes, you might never know what you're missing. As for podcasters, the download stats available from their hosting provider do not usually include YouTube views because the two formats are difficult to reconcile.

Here at Rephonic, we've been working on a solution.

📺 How It Works

If we were able to successfully match a podcast with it's YouTube channel, you can now see videos linked up to episodes for any podcast even if you don't have a Rephonic account.

For example, see how we've linked up YouTube content with the Huberman Lab podcast here:

We're matching up YouTube video titles with their corresponding RSS feed episode titles. Even in cases where video titles may not match perfectly (quite common) we're able to use fuzzy matching to pick the right episode most of the time.

It can even link up multiple clips to one episode like this:

If you're logged in, every podcast with a matched YouTube channel now displays a convenient summary:

Tap on a thumbnail to navigate to the video on YouTube and continue your research there.

Rephonic users can now get a full picture of a show's overall reach thanks to the podcast listener estimates and video view data. This insight is essential for evaluating the potential value of getting featured on a show as a guest or sponsor.

📈 The First Global YouTube Podcast Charts

It turns out every country has its own Popular Podcasts chart on YouTube with 200 chart positions, although not all of them are usually accessible.

YouTube's podcast homepage is enabled in the following countries that we checked with a VPN:

  • Singapore
  • France
  • Germany
  • Sweden
  • Norway
  • Denmark
  • Poland
  • Brazil
  • Ireland
  • India
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • UK
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • Mexico

It is notably missing from Japan and South East Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, etc.)

YouTube podcast page for Vietnam
The Popular Podcasts page for Vietnam is not usually accessible but YouTube is aggregating the data.

We found a way to view them all and we've made the data accessible to all in our new YouTube podcast charts. We update these charts daily for 39 countries and territories and have made them available for free.

Note that we are not able to match up every YouTube podcast to it's corresponding RSS feed podcast so some entries are shown grayed out.

Now you can see a podcast's Apple, Spotify and YouTube rankings all in one place. For example, view the Lex Fridman Podcast here and scroll down to Chart Rankings.
