  • Divine Comedy- inferno

    It feels ungracious to criticize let alone complain, given that the unpaid readers are willing to do what I am not, but the first reader was so gifted that I was quite disappointed in the next two. The fact that this is one of the great masterpieces of epic poetry and Longfellow's gorgeous and amazing translation is its own gift to the English speaking world helps to motivate me to press on. But I do hope that when a better reading comes along, the stilted and unmusical renderings included here ... more
