William Tyrrell - Nowhere Child

The Australian

William Tyrrell was a three year old boy who disappeared from the village of Kendall, on the mid-north-coast of New South Wales. Key facts were kept from the public, from day one. A lot of what was reported, especially early on, was false. In the new podcast, Nowhere Child, The Australian’s Caroline Overington delves into a case where notions of class and privilege; opportunity and poverty came cr... more

  • Pretty awful

It appears that I’m not the only one who finds this person’s speaking voice almost un-listenable. It’s so monotone and slow and often shaky. Yet when she’s interviewing people she’s firing off questions fast, speaking over the other person in a pretty repetitive and often insensitive way. The way she questioned the paternal grandma was classist and patronising: “Why DIDN’T you have a lawyer?” That grandma has the patience of a saint. The whole thing is pretty classist actually with bias shown to... more

  • Easy to listen to

With the exception of the interviewer asking a question and then talking over the top of the person answering. Very annoying and frustrating. Every good interviewer knows to STFU and let the person answer. It’s basic manners too.

  • Speculative and hard listening (presenter!)

Such a heartbreaking situation yet the opportunity to provide insight and understanding to the general public, particularly around ‘taboo’ topics like the foster system. Would have loved to hear more from former Snr Detective Gary Jubelin. Wasted opportunities made all the worse by THAT voice!!

  • Slow

Williams parents but have been bad, I’d like to know why all their kids were taken, they don’t take children from their parents unless it’s a very dangerous situation

  • Problematic bias on display for a click bait angle on the story

It’s disappointing that there is such an obvious bias and sensationalist angle attached to this podcast. Like in any under-staffed, inadequately funded large scale organisation, there are important issues with the child protection and foster system in Australia and they are worthy of investigation. The journalist here really fails in their ethical obligation to provide accurate and balanced explanations of how the system works, particularly when for many listeners, this might be their only sourc... more
