Do you care about the environment but feel “I want to act, but if no one else does, it won't make a difference,” and “But if you don't solve everything, it isn't worth doing anything”?

We are the antidote! You're not alone. Hearing role models overcome the same feelings to enjoy acting on their values creates meaning, purpose, community, and emotional reward.

  • Good topics, poor hosting

I listened to the interview with Alexander Clapp. Like many episodes, the book they were discussing (which Clapp wrote) was topical and well-researched. But the host added next to nothing, aside from some plugs for his personal coaching workshop and a request for donations. He could barely complete a full sentence. Unfortunate because the guest author was very articulate and thoughtful.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

851: J. Eric Oliver: How to Know Yourself
Q: How does meditation fit into leading a sustainable life?
Meditation deepens awareness of one's impulses and pain, which cultivates equanimity and courage to act consistently on environmental values despite discomfort or uncertainty.
851: J. Eric Oliver: How to Know Yourself
Q: What do you mean by treating the self as a process rather than a fixed entity?
I describe the self as a nested system with animal, linguistic, egoistic, and transcendent layers; recognizing this gives people flexibility to renegotiate their impulses and align actions with long-term values instead of fixed identities.
851: J. Eric Oliver: How to Know Yourself
Q: Can you explain how the class you taught at the University of Chicago influenced the book?
The class transformed into the book by shifting from lecture-based material to stories and vignettes that weave together philosophy, neuroscience, and spirituality, making the content accessible and applicable to a broad audience.
848: Peter Simek, part 1: EarthX's CEO
Q: Is the environment something that matters to you?
Yes, it matters deeply as a core driver of his work and personal life, rooted in sustaining natural places and aligning personal values with actions that protect ecosystems.
845: Sarah Goodyear and Doug Gordon: The War on Cars and Life After Cars
Q: Why is it (the advocacy for human-friendly cities) seen as radical?
Prioritizing human comfort and safety over cars often feels counter to societal norms that have historically favored automobile use.
