Hans Madueme | The Crucifixion of Jesus: Suffering, Death & Burial
Q: What are a few things Christians ought to say and believe that scripture teaches about why Jesus died?
Jesus's death serves as a fulfillment of the penalty for sin, with theories like penal substitution and Christus Victor explaining atonement. Although the Nicene Creed itself doesn't provide explicit details about these theories, it frames the significance of Christ's suffering within the context of salvation, implying a connection with the prophetic scriptures like Isaiah 53.
Hans Madueme | The Crucifixion of Jesus: Suffering, Death & Burial
Q: When I was younger, I struggled a lot to think about the death of Jesus in light of what we learned early in the creed, right? So that he's God from God, he's light from light. Can we say that God died or Jesus, or do we have to just say Jesus died? Or how do we, how should we think about the fact that the eternal son is one who is crucified, died, buried?
Most Christians relate to the struggle over whether to say God died. While saying 'Jesus died' is accepted among believers, the concept that 'God died' is more challenging, as it suggests a paradox within Christian belief that the Son of God, being fully human and fully divine, could experience death without compromising His divine nature.
